星期三 [ 2010-5-26 12:49:00 | mywatches1440 ] Magazine Street in New Orleans Zuka Baby, a baby supplies store specializing in eco-friendly and natural parenting products such as reusable diapers and co-sleeping pillows, opened earlier this fall on lower Magazine Street. Its owner, Erin Reho, the mother of a 16-month-old with another baby on the way, got her start in the business selling cloth diapers and baby slings out of a friend's Uptown lingerie store. When that store closed, Reho went in search of a space of her own. In mid-October, she opened Zuka Baby in a 720-square-foot former gallery at 2124 Magazine St. sexy lingerie china "This space wasn't even on the market yet," Reho said. "But it's two blocks from my house and it was really affordable and small." Response to the new store has exceeded expectations, said Reho, who figures interest is driven by mothers in search of the sorts of products and information she found to be lacking in New Orleans after giving birth. "The day I opened was one of the busiest days I've had," she said. "People were just waiting. ... When you first open, you think, 'It's gonna be slow. It's gonna be hard.' I think it's gone pretty well so far. As far as sales, I've seen pretty good numbers." Before and since the birth of Zuka Baby, several other new businesses have opened in close proximity, many with a similar environmentally conscious bent, building on what Reho now refers to as "the green block." And the openings aren't limited to lower Magazine Street. In recent months, a variety of new businesses have cropped up along the corridor. There are new restaurants, rug stores, salons, clothing and design outlets, some of them filling long-vacant commercial spaces along the six-mile stretch. Roxanne Candebat, office manager for the Magazine Street Merchants Association, said her group expects to add as many as 20 new members to its annual shopping guide put out in January. Many are brand new to the street while others have been around for a while and simply never decided to join the merchants group. replica tag heuer watches As a result, Candebat is hopeful this year's tally of 156 member businesses will hold steady in the coming year and maybe even be surpassed. "We'll be real close," she said. "It's more promising than I thought it would be with the economy right now." While most observers count the proliferation of new Magazine Street businesses as a promising sign, some caution the arrivals are not necessarily evidence the business climate along the street has fully recovered. "The only people I know that seem to be doing pretty well are the restaurants and bars," said Greg Dombourian, MSMA president and rug store owner. "You've got sections of the street that this past Saturday were busy for us," Dombourian said the week of Thanksgiving. "But the past few months, Saturdays have been pretty slow." Some of the latest additions are counting on their services and products being in-demand even in a down economy. Reho notes that reusable diapers are not only easier on the planet; they are also easier on the wallet than the disposable variety. A basic set of cloth diapers and related supplies runs about $300, she said, a fraction of the $2,500 she estimates is spent on average keeping a child in throw-away diapers from birth until potty training is complete.
